I’ve never been one to shy away from wearing shorts.   I actually used to think they were quite a normal piece of clothing in my wardrobe when I was growing up.  Going out in the summertime, I’d opt for shorts.  They are functional when they need to be and they are a useful bathing suit cover up when heading out and about.  But here’s the thing.  Not everyone feels this way about shorts.  Not everyone wears the right (length) shorts.  And for some reason, this article of clothing has been up for the great wear this not that debate.  And I can see why.  They’re not so great on everyone if you’re not wearing the right pair….

The Great Short Debate

Shorts too short and you starting looking like you’re trying to relive your high school and junior high days.  Shorts too long and you look like you’re trying to pull off capri pants and both of those options don’t look good on any lady, ladies….So what’s the magic length and where the heck do you go to find them?

A Short History on….well, Shorts

For all their pomp and circumstance, shorts were generally sported by boys in the late 1800’s.  According to Wikipedia, in the 1890’s they were called knee pants.   Boys generally wore them until they reached puberty and were given a pair of ‘trousers’.  Fast forward to the 1930’s, when wearing shorts or knickerbockers became popular in North America, then WWII when soldiers were stationed in warmer climates, the popularity of wearing shorts spread. (wikipedia)

Wearing pants for women was taboo until movie stars like Katherine Hepburn gave them a try in the 1930’s.  This was based around a time where dresses were literally all women wore.  So if you can only imagine the outrage it must have caused for mothers all over to have their daughter in…gasp! PANTS!  Shorts on women weren’t seen until the 50’s.  Granted, they appeared here and there for sports teams but even then, it was particularly scandalous.  No decent lady should be seen wearing shorts!   It wasn’t really until the 70’s when the masses of women started wearing shorts as an everyday piece.

The Big Short Debate today

I’m not saying that everyone should go out and buy up all the shorts….some people just don’t like wearing shorts and some people don’t feel confident in them.  And you know what?  That’s okay!  Yes, it’s completely rational to not want to wear something you just don’t like.  And don’t let me tell you otherwise.  But I will tell you that there are so many options out there, that it is, at least worth a try.  There are high waisted shorts, shorts with longer inseams, regular shorts and bermuda shorts, which are probably my two favorites.  Nope, not gonna support the hot pants or short-shorts here, sorry not sorry.

Quick Tips for Wearing Shorts that are Right for You

If you are on the fence when it comes to wearing shorts, here are a few tips for different body types that might give you more confidence to try them: Thicker thighs, shapely waist, bigger bust?  Opt for longer rise (5-6″) with minimal detailed styles.  Wear with lightweight tops that skim at the widest part of your hips.  Bermuda style shorts are great for you!   If you’ve got a shorter torso opt out of high waisted as they scrunch up your midsection.  Petite?  Opt for leg lengthening styles that hit anywhere between 3-5″.  If you have slim legs and a narrow body, you can wear most any length.
