Workplace.  That word means a great number of things to women in the 21st century.  Today, a workplace can be anything from a home office, to a studio, to a classroom, or even an official office.   The way we dress has changed to match our varying degrees of work places and spaces.  Today on Art in the Find, you’ll learn how to master the art of dressing for business casual attire in the workplace.

Today’s style post is not only inspired by fall, with deep, rich jewel-tone colors, but by an outfit for the modern-day workplace. As most of you might imagine, I’m firmly against the work suit.  Ohhh, the grays.  It just makes you feel gloomy.  And if given the option, I’d love to give officewear a make-over!  There’s no reason why you can’t throw a little color in there, while still remaining professional.  It’s all about the pieces you shop for and how you shop for them.   Here is my A, B, and C’s to business casual attire, using my striped skirt outfit as workplace inspiration.

3 Tips for Business Casual Attire

A) Think color:  Jewel tones are minimal, yet pack a punch.  When choosing an outfit for the workplace, if it needs to be a suit, focus on color, trying to stray away from grays.  It’ll have a brightening effect on your attitude.

B) Think versatility: Who says business attire has to match from top to bottom?  It may have been that way once upon a time, but not anymore!  When choosing work wear, try mixing-n-matching pieces.  The example I use is mixing a blue solid top with striped skirt outfit.  Choose one piece, be it a top or bottom, that has a solid color, and mix-n-match with a patterned piece.  Unless, you’re wearing a dress, there’s really no reason why pinstripes need to go floor to ceiling!  (Unless you want to look like wallpaper.)

C) Think Family:  The secret to pairing patterns of different shapes and sizes is to choose patterns that contain a color within the same family.  If you’re going to wear a patterned jewel-toned blue top, then a patterned (or solid) skirt (take my striped skirt outfit, as the example here), pant, or other bottom will pair well if it contains a shade of that same blue tone somewhere within it.  Remember the days of complementary colors on the color wheel? Perfecto!

Those were my A, B, and C’s to make a fabulous outfit for work!  Who says you can’t have a fun with color at work!?  P.S.  You can throw on that serious blazer over the cute striped skirt outfit to give it extra layered pop.

Hello Rule A, Color!  A Jewel-toned blue top pairs great with a statement necklace to add that bit of color and sparkle.  The not-so-boring rule for business casual attire!

Rule B? Versatility at its best with solids and stripes together in the striped skirt outfit.  You can also up the outfit ante with a great pair of metallic oxfords.

I hope this striped skirt outfit and my A, B, and C’s to dressing for “the office” have inspired you to add some color into your business casual attire!  Looking forward to seeing what you try.  Want more style inspiration?  I’ve got a great page dedicated to outfit ideas called my Ways to Wear series.
