The Room & Board Grove Bed: Guest Bedroom Remodel Part 2

Posted on: Tuesday, January 23, 2018

One of my absolute favorite pieces from our guest bedroom remodel is the Room & Board Grove bed we chose.  When we were deciding on which direction to go in when choosing the bed, I wanted mid-century to play a big part.  A few months prior, I had attended an event at the newly opened Room & Board at the Westfield UTC.   At the event, I was struck by how beautiful all of the pieces of furniture were.  That event, which coincided with the room remodel idea, was the kickoff to what became the signature piece in the room, our Room & Board Grove bed.

I did quite a bit of research when it came to deciding on a bed of choice.  It was no easy decision, I have to tell you.  I mean, is it ever easy when you’re trying to bring a room together?  When living in Toronto, we had to purchase new bedroom pieces because we didn’t want to lug everything from San Diego and back two years later.  Because of our limited time frame, I didn’t want to invest in serious bedroom pieces, so I scoured Craigslist and turned to Ikea. (Which is key for budget-style interior decorating!)

When we moved back to San Diego, I knew we were in for some serious ‘nesting’ as we were looking to purchase our first home, rather than rent like we had done for the past, gosh, almost 12 years?!  That meant when it came to think about decorating (yes, I turned to Craigslist and Ikea still) I took the key pieces we needed to add to our room very, very seriously.  I wanted craftsmanship and quality over low budget necessities.   This is where my experience with Room & Board came in.

Walking into the showroom back in October, I was blown away by the quality of the pieces.  Come to find out, over 90% of their products are manufactured in the U.S. by family-owned companies.  (That in itself, is amazing in this day and age.)  It struck me right away that I wanted a piece of furniture from Room & Board for our guest bedroom remodel.  I checked out their site and settled on the mid-century style Room and Board Grove bed in cherry in a queen size.  The tapered legs and solid wood headboard really give it that mid-century feel without overdoing it in style.

Fun Facts about the Room & Board Grove Bed

  • The Grove bed is handcrafted in Pennsylvania by family-owned woodworking business, Spectra.
  • Due to its solid wood make up, the bed responds over time by deepening in color.
  • Because of the bed frame design, there is no need for a box spring.

The mattress, which is a queen size Nectar sleep queen memory foam sleep mattress, was the perfect mattress for the bed.  Because the Room and Board Grove bed frame doesn’t require a boxspring, this mattress, was perfect.  It is delivered in a rectangular box, unfolds out to create an airy, soft sleeping dream!  Ask our family, who stayed over for the holidays, and they’ll attest to its super comfort level!

Given that I wanted to give the room an airy feel, I opted for the Luxe sheet bundle in solid white from Brooklinen to cover the Room & Board Grove bed.  The silky soft cotton sheets are perfect for the Grove bed. (Brooklinen is offering Art in the Find readers $20 off + free shipping on any order with code CONNI20.)  I also wanted to add a bit of soft texture and color with a few hand woven and painted accent pillows from One Fine Nest.  I opted for the 20″ rust/tan African mud pillow cover (with insert) and the 18″ white African mud pillow cover (with insert).  Made with beautiful hand craftsmanship, the mud pillows contrast wonderfully on the Brooklinen bed sheets.

Finally,  I finished the room off with a few elements of natural pieces and art mixed in.  Mixing the art and raw, natural materials gives the room a warm, clean feeling.  I choose art prints from Arielle Vey, a local San Diego photographer, whose beachy prints work perfectly because of our vicinity to the beach!
