15 Women Owned Businesses : A Hand-Picked Holiday Shopping Guide

Posted on: Friday, December 8, 2017

Over these last few weeks I’ve done quite a bit of thinking about aiming my holiday shopping & gift giving towards women owned businesses.  Why?  With hoards and hoards of holiday gift guides, I felt quite overwhelmed during Black Friday and Cyber Monday.  To be quite honest, as a blogger and stylist, I felt like I was being pressured to make one.  But for some reason, something kept holding me back.  What would make my holiday gift guide any different than the 3 million already out there?  To be honest, I didn’t shop at. all. over that holiday weekend so why would I pressure others to?

I did some rethinking on the topic of holiday shopping and reshuffled my ideas to something more positive.  Here’s my take on the subject of gift giving.  I’m reaching an age where I feel that gifts that I want to give (and get) should have some meaning.  I love making a purchase when there’s a story, a connection, and maybe even a women behind the brand.  That doesn’t mean that I won’t buy something at a corporate store, I always down for a good sale.  But I like when a brand has a story, when I know who the makers are, and where my money is going.  Those are the types of gifts I want to celebrate this holiday season.

So this year, I’m choosing to give my recommendations for where you should turn to for holiday gifts of a curated, unique kind.  These types of gifts are from women owned businesses that I would shop at, with or without it being the holiday season.  Because, even though I love a good pair of holiday jammies, what I want to give is a gift that has longevity.   Without further ado and with great fanfare (because I’m a great fan) for each and every one of these small women owned businesses, here is my take on a holiday gift guide this year.  And if any one of my family members are reading this…take note (wink, wink).

Holiday Shopping Guide | Women Owned Businesses I Love

Bags & Accessories ||

Boutonné – One of my favorite leather goods companies based in San Diego.  Erin, who has become a dear friend of mine thanks to her business and my blog, is so so talented.  I love her beautiful leather bags and have a few that I use regularly.  The bags are minimal, clean, and beautifully made.

Clare V –  This accessories line, exclusively made in L.A. is one of my absolute favorite women owned businesses accessories line.  Founder, Clare is inspired by all things French and has such fabulous designs, textures, and colors in her bags.  I have an tan leather fold over clutch from 3 years back that I use over and over.

Denim, Sweaters, & Style Basics ||

Cuyana –  This women owned business duo has been touted by many for their beautifully simple weekender bags, silk tops, and sweaters.  They create classic pieces that are timeless and well made.

Industry Standard – This American brand has great basic tees & classic denim, all made in an L.A. factory and sold online.  Their prices are reasonable and their pieces are all considered to be what you’d pull together to make a great capsule wardrobe!

Kule Stripes – As most of you know, I’m quite stripes obsessed.  And this brand suits my stripe fancy oh-so-well.  I love their turtlenecks as well as their tee dresses (still on my list).   You can never have enough stripes.

Everlane*  – This brand has always prided itself in clean practices when it comes to clothing.  They are launching a denim line (10 years in the making) and it should be worth a try.  They strive to have the world’s cleanest denim factory and I think that’s one majorly awesome goal. (*not women-owned but I love their sustainable mission and practices.)

Jewelry ||

Natalie Borton Designs –  Another San Diego based small women owned business, Natalie designs and hand-makes beautifully minimal, California-inspired jewelry.  I have probably 10 of her necklaces and I always pack them in my travel bag when I leave on any trip.  They go with practically every outfit I own.

Raw by Olivia Mar –  This darling young gal is creating beautifully handcrafted gem jewelry.  Each piece is handmade in San Diego with environmentally low-impact practices.  I have a lovely ring of hers and they’re perfect for stacking or wearing as a simple piece.

Shoppe California – Looking for beautiful, California made jewelry/jewelry designers all in one place? Then this site is the perfect place.  Jessica started Shoppe California as a way to curate the most amazing jewelry & their makers in a one stop online shop.  This is a great collection of many women owned businesses and some of my absolute jewelry favs are housed here!

Shoes ||

Freda Salvador – I cannot say enough great things about this Sausalito-based women owned shoe brand.  I have introduced countless clients to Cristina & Megan’s shoes, have traipsed through Paris in their D’orsay oxfords, and have worn them down to the point of a much-needed shoe repair.  I’m asking the hubby for another pair this holiday, so that’s on my holiday gift list for sure!

Poppy Barley – When I moved to Toronto, I was introduced to some amazing brands.  One of which is the shoe brand, Poppy Barley, started by two sisters, Justine and Kendall.  I met Kendall, then wrote a post on their oxfords (which are a favorite shoe style of mine) and… They design their shoes in Canada and have them ethically made in a factory in Mexico.  I love their new leopard slipper!

Interior Design, Home, Accessories, Art  ||

Pepper B – Canadian friend and pattern maker/designer, Danni, creates the most whimsical, small batch products.  I personally love her accessories line and have a few of her travel cases.

One Fine Nest – We’re currently working on a guest bedroom re-do and I sought out this home brand on Instagram.  One Fine Nest is a California based custom vintage African mud pillow brand.  I love their prints and for anyone who wants to add subtle patterns into their home and bedrooms, these pillows are some of my favorites.

Sophie & Lili – The artist behind the brand, Jennifer Vallez, creates the most amazing illustrations.  A few years back she illustrated a picture of my sister and me and it remains one of my favorite art pieces.  She also recently captured a fun styled look of mine.  Her pieces are perfect for a family gift or sibling gift too.

Beauty & Skincare ||

Indie Lee –  With eco-friendly ingredients, Indie Lee’s skincare line is earth and body friendly.  The packaging is chic and the website is educational.  With a list of good and bad ingredients to look out for, you’ll benefit from a visit and from using her products.

Beaute Nouveau –  In my mid-thirties, good skincare is something that I care deeply about.  Founder and friend, Lacey Haegen, has a mission to hand-craft simple skin care products derived from plants and flowers.  With over 22 years in the biz, she knows what she’s talking about.  I love her products!

Custom Gifts & Gift Design || A collection of handcrafted, well-made goods put together in small batch, beautifully designed themed gift packages.

Gasparaflora – Ryann founded her gifting company with thoughtful curation in mind.  She has an eye for visual presentation and puts together beautifully curated gift collections for the discerning bride, friend, coffee lover, you name it.

Poppy & Bear – Founder, Mari grew up in San Diego and this year decided to launch a darling curated gifting boxes.  Most boxes have California-themed gifts, which include a sweet note, with a picture and description of the products and makers.

This amazing list of women owned businesses is ever growing and I am always on the lookout for wonderful, small, curated brands to bring to you.  If you know of any brands that you think would be a great fit to add to this list, leave a comment and let me know!  I’ll be updating regularly, so keep checking back!
