I'm not much for making resolutions but I am definitely one to make a few changes here and there,  starting with honing in on my capsule wardrobe essentials.  If you don't know what capsule wardrobe essentials you might already own or need to think about investing in, ask yourself the following:

CAPSULE WARDROBE QUESTIONS

  • Are your items functional?
  • Can you pair them with three or more items to make multiple outfits?
  • Do they last throughout two or more seasons?

If so, then they can be used when creating a capsule wardrobe because they're pieces you've worn for years.  Invest in them.  Keep them front and center in your closet.

START WITH A CLOSET EDIT

Last week I did a closet edit, which I do in my closet probably six times a year.  Why so many times?  Because each time I do, I feel revitalized.  It makes my closet look clean.  It simplifies things.  And to be honest?  When I don't need to be spending any more money on clothes, it makes me feel as though I have a brand new wardrobe.  It makes it a lot easier to decide what to wear in the morning when your closet isn't crammed to the gills.

There's a funny thing that I notice when I finish these closet edits.  The same few pieces make their way front-and-center in my closet.  Every time.  These pieces are the closet essentials.

WHAT MAKES IT A CAPSULE WARDROBE ESSENTIAL?

What makes a piece really essential? There are a few factors that you should consider when you're determining whether or not a piece is essential:

  • Longevity: The cost/wear scenario, you can get a lot of wear out of an item for years' on end
  • Minimal patterns/prints
  • Multi-seasonal: It can be worn for at least 3 out of 4 seasons
  • Versatile: It can be worn at least 3 different ways
  • Comfortable:  You feel great wearing it!

An example of one of those capsule wardrobe essentials is my no-fuss, wear-with-almost-everything, jean jacket.  A jean jacket outfit can be casual or can be dressed up, and I'm all for it.  I purchased my J.Crew jean jacket about 10 years ago (yes, you read that right) and probably paid about $120.00 or so for it at the time.  When you think about the fact that it's lasted 10 years, each wear makes it worth the price.   That's the wonderful thing about capsule wardrobe pieces is that they work with any season.  You can incorporate with a cozy winter sweater or a flowing summer caftan.
