How to Dress Down a Special Occasion Dress

One of the biggest complaints from clients is that they have lots of one-off pieces. You know those pieces that you purchased for a one-event purpose and then don’t know how to wear them again. So you don’t. And then they sit in your closet unworn? How frustrating is that? I get it and today, I’m sharing three ideas for taking those one-off, dressier dresses and pairing them down, casually, so you can wear them more often! I also filmed a quick style video showing you how to wear the looks here!

How to dress down a dressier dress

Who doesn’t want to maximize the wear out of all of their pieces? But it can be hard when you have a bunch of pieces you’ve purchase for separate events or occasions, only to picture that item for that event, only worn that one way. Here are three quick and easy ways to dress down those dressier dresses so you can wear them more often!

1 | Add Sneakers and a Denim Jacket | Yes, friends, this is my absolute favorite way to make any dress seem daytime, casual. When in doubt, I always opt for my sneakers then throw on a denim jacket as a layering piece. Then the final touch is adding a statement bag (something with a hint of print or pattern always does the trick!) to complete the outfit and off I go.

2 | Add a simple leather belt + Flats | Weekend away? Why not take that dressier dress, add a belt to it then throw on some simple flats? This is a sure-fire way to make this dress daytime casual appropriate, and comfortable, and who doesn’t want that?

3 | Add a Sweater or Cardigan, Mules + Finish up with a Belt Bag | Hands free is the best way to rock it these days, as a mama, and just generally as someone on the go. I love to take a dress and see what potential it has as an “other” piece. What I mean by that is asking, “what else can I do with this piece?” My answer is usually to try to shift it into a “skirt” by adding a sweater or cardigan over the dress. (Also, doubles as a great way to stay warm on a chilly spring evening).
